Still have baby tooth at 16?!

Question: Still have baby tooth at 16.?
I am 16 years old, and all my baby teeth have fallen out, except one.. my eye tooth, and its not even slightly wiggly. My last tooth to fall out was in Feb 07 and I couldnt even see a white bit of tooth until at least a year later, and its not fully grown yet I dont think. Should I be worried.?
My mum said she had to get her eye-teeth pulled out at 18 so could it just be genetics.?Health Question & Answer

There are a number of possible reasons for this, and all of them aren't that unheard of:

1. You are congenitally missing the adult canine (in that case, as long as the root of the baby canine stays okay, it may stay in there for a few more decades!)

2. There isn't enough space for the adult tooth to erupt, but if there is it would erupt correctly

3. The adult canine is impacted. Besides wisdom teeth, upper canines are the most commonly impacted teeth. A panoramic xray will show where that tooth is and whether it has a good chance of coming in. If it's relatively straight, you can opt to have the baby tooth exctracted and the adult tooth surgically or orthodontically (or a combination) pulled into place. If it's too far out of the way, is impacted horizontally, or otherwise wouldn't be able to end up in the right place, they may remove the impacted one and just keep the baby tooth in as long as possible.

By the way, if you do lose the baby tooth and there isn't an adult one, you can get an implant or a bridge so you aren't stuck with a space in that visible area.Health Question & Answer

Yes it is genetic. Some people do have retained baby tooth and some times the baby tooth is there when permanent tooth is missing. So before getting the baby tooth pulled out, xray is taken out to see whether the adult tooth is present or not. I am 28 and still have a baby eye tooth. The adult tooth was too far away from its correct spot to ever come in. I had two other eye teeth that also did not fall out, but I got them pulled and the adult teeth were pulled down with little brackets attached to braces. I had braces on for 3 years - no fun.

This usually occurs because of small mouths and high palates, which is usually the result of being a mouth breather (i.e. something keeps you from breathing through your nose). B/C the mouth is open, the tongue does not press the teeth out and the mouth stays small. Some adult teeth don't come in if there isn't space.Health Question & Answer

i will have 1 baby tooth my WHOLE life.

this is pretty rare.

you probably have the same thing!

its just where one of your baby tooth doesnt have a permanent tooth under it, so the baby tooth doesnt come out because there is no permanent tooth to force it out!

nothing to woory about, you dont have to have surgery or nothing..lol

AND, no they dont pull out your baby tooth to tell if theres a permenent too there! they just take a X-Ray to tell, thats all.
they want to keep that tooth in there!!!Health Question & Answer

i had a similar thing happen when i was about 16 or 17 and i ended up having the tooth pulled out lol not too much fun
but it was a genetics thing Health Question & Answer

FYI,
this is little odd, NOT unheard of. It may well be just genetics especially if the same was true with your mother.Health Question & Answer
