Associates degree - which generally means 2 years of college. My ex-girlfriend went to school for 2 years after high school and is a dental hygienist now. As far as just an assistant, she was an assistant before her schooling was complete. She gets $30+ an hour everywhere she works now so it isn't bad at all. Health Question & Answer

In the US, you can either go to assisting school (2 years) or you can take the expanded functions test and state exam to become certified. I'm not sure how much the cost is. Health Question & Answer
