Do i have to wear retainer all the time?, etc.?!

Question: Do i have to wear retainer all the time.?, etc..?
I had my braces off today. Feels so weird but i love them. I gonna have a retainer in a couple days and i think its gonna be one of the metal ones that slurs the speech. I was thinking, if it slurs my speech would it be ok if i wore it all the time except at school.? Cause i dont wanna seem like a prat in school.? Can someone help please.? Thank youuuu.Health Question & Answer

You should wear your retainer full time until your orthodontist tells you that you can go to nighttime. It is ok to remove the retainers for a few hours but put it back in as soon as possible. Like for sports or a special occasion. Removing the retainers is the fastest way to loose them or break them so be very careful when they are not in your mouth. And yes, your teeth always want to go back to where they came from so it is a very important part of your orthodontic treatment. After about 6 months of full time wear you should go to nighttime if all is holding well. You should...even after a few years, put the retainers in once a week, at night. If all feels well in the morning you will know that nothing is moving. As far as slurred speech, yes at first but it will go away the more you talk...what a perfect excuse to get on the phone and talk to friends right....or read a book outloud. Keep your new smile and wear the retainers you'll be happy you did later. btw, lack of retainer wear is one of the biggest re-treatment causes for adults.Health Question & Answer

beleive me you really need to i had my braces off last year and i HATE my retainers, firstly last winter i ate to many honey and lemon sooothers with my retainers on and now they are yellow and stained and it won't come OFF!!! decondly i left them off for a while and my teeth started to det back, my authodentist shouted at me !!! also last week i lost my top retainer cause i only wear them at night now, and i sleep walk sometimes, and take them out in the night and put them in some random place wear i can't find them last time i found them in the bin !!!

Finnaly to top off my peoblems i have to9 wear them until i am 18!!!!

so my advice eventhough your mind is to chuck them in the bin don't caus eyour teeth will go back to before really quickly!!!!Health Question & Answer

Sorry. The only reason you got your braces off today is because you will be wearing the retainer. Otherwise, all that was for nothing.

It's so hard to explain to braces-aged kids, but you will absolutely regret not keeping up with it. Your teeth are movable, which you've just learned over the last, what, two to three years.? THEY WILL DRIFT BACK!!

It really depends on the type of retainer you'll be getting, it most likely wont slur your speech but even if it does, your speech will adjust in, at most, about two days. You might only have to wear it at night. It also might be a solid plastic one like i had, which no-one will notice.Health Question & Answer

It's important to wear the retainer 24/7 for the first few months because that is when most of the shifting occurs.

Your speech will get better with practise.Health Question & Answer

The orthodontist will tell you how long you've got to wear them and how much. My friend usually wears them at nighttime and in the morning.Health Question & Answer

Wear it as prescribed and practice talking with your retainer in - practice is the only way to keep from slurring --- remember how you first talked with braces, it will be very similar and before you know it the slurring will be gone.

The metal ones are called Hawley's and they are adjustable, which is wonderful if your teeth ever decide to move or if they need to do any last minute adjusting to your teeth and bite after your braces off.

If you don't wear it at school, your teeth might move. Remember that retainers are common at school too, so you will not be the first or the last student to ever wear a retainer at school :)

Talk with your orthodontist about how and when you are supposed to wear your retainer.Health Question & Answer
