When the dentist does the Root Canal Treatment, it does not hurt as he numbs the area before starting. If you are still afraid, then you can opt for laughing gas which also called concious sedation. However after root canal there is pain for 2-3 days as the tooth takes sometime to adjust to this. However for that your dentist will prescribe to medicines. The same way taking out wisdom teeth itself may be painful as the dentist will numb the area and you may not feel anything. However there after there are many precautions suggested by dentist to avoid infection. You can read all about Root Canal and Tooth Extraction from the following two very informative articles

If he is a good dentist you should have very little pain during or after the root canal procedure. It will prolong the use of your tooth by many years. Wisdom teeth will be sore for a few days after extraction and you will have some pain and swelling. He will prescribe pain medication for that. You will also have large pockets in the gums where the teeth were. They must be cleaned carefully for months until they fill in to level. Dental health is very important to your overall health, so get the work done, and do what you can to keep your mouth healthy in the future.Health Question & Answer

My wisdom teeth were pretty hard to get out and it wasn't bad at all. I didn't have swelling or anything afterward.

My root canal hurt. Then I had to see another dentist who had to fix what the first dentist did. When she worked on my tooth to get the rest of the nerve that he left behind, I didn't feel a thing. It depends on how good the dentist is. Health Question & Answer

Not really so bad. Having the baby should be more painful.
