Color changes may occur due to several reasons.

1- It can be physiological (due to race and/or ethnic background. For example, African-Americans present whiter teeth with darker gums).

2- It can be a tattoo-type pigmentation due to a restoration (etc). But this is generally in a local area where you may have a tooth restored with metal or amalgam.

3- It can be environmental...For instance, mine workers present darker gums.

4- It may be a side effect of long-term tetracycline uptake. If you used this antibiotic for an infection, etc., this may cause darker gums.

OR

Do you mean purple color.? This generally occurs due to bleeding into the tissue. It should not cause any problem if it is for a short period and if it is not causing major swelling. It should resolve by itself within 5-7 days and the tissue should turn into its normal color. However, in severe cases it may cause tissue necrosis and exposed bone. Or it may cause severe swelling (which is generally due to continuous bleeding into the tissue). If this is the case, you need to see your doctor.
Health Question & Answer

Sounds like you have something between your teeth or you have what are called "black triangles", which are very common with braces (don't worry, the orthodontist can fix them).

You might also have a little dried blood that has clotted up between your teeth due to irritation of the gums.

Brush, floss, and rinse your mouth out very well. If the pain still continues in the morning - then call your dentist and get checked out.Health Question & Answer
