Can I get a tooth extracted even if that tooth still has an infection?!

Question: Can I get a tooth extracted even if that tooth still has an infection.?
I am taking antibiotics but I hope to get that problem tooth pulled tomorrow. Can I do this if there is still an infection.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The answer is yes.

There are two schools of taught on this. Some doc like to give antibiotics if thre is a lot of swelling because it allows the anesththic an easier time to take effect. Some docs will extract the tooth the same day, if possible. Keep in mind antibioics is not a cure for a ooth infection and only delays progression.

I am a ittle more gun ho about extracting a tooth, if the sweeling is not severe and anasthesia can be administered I will take the tooth out on the same day. The reason is the source of the infection is the tooth. Once the source is gone the body starts to heal.

also there have been growing concern with people being overmedicated with antibiotics. That is people are taking antibiotics for everything that when there is a serious infection, the amounts of antibiotics readily available decreases if the patient develop tolerance to standard antibiotics.

also keep in mind once the tooth is infected, antibiotics wont cure it. So whle it may suppress the symptoms originating from the tooth, the tooth will remain infected. Like I said I am a little more gun ho on extracting teeth. Get rid of the source and the body starts to heal.
Health Question & Answer

Yes you can, however it will be considered a "hot tooth" - meaning one that is still infected - and it might be more difficult to numb up completely. You might not respond as well to pain medication and it might hurt a little more. Medication might also be required following the extraction to keep it from getting infected further or to kill any infection your first round of medication didn't completely kill off.Health Question & Answer
