Should I get my tooth pulled or get a root canal?!

Question: Should I get my tooth pulled or get a root canal.?
I have been having pain in my new last tooth for a few weeks so I went to the dentist this morning. He said it is abscessed. I can either get a root canal and crown or I can get it pulled and at a later date get an implant (which as you know is expensive). At this point with all the trouble I have been through the last year I would just assume get it pulled then get an implant later, I am afraid that a crown won't last as long as an implant and I will just have to get one later anyway (I am only 30 and would like to use my teeth for a long time). What do you think I should do.?

Get the root canal. You may not need a crown, and even if you do, having the root of your own real tooth is always better than an implant. also, go to a root canal specialist rather than letting a regular dentist do this. They will know better how to treat the tooth to save it if at all possible.Health Question & Answer

I agree 100% with Random Precision. An implant is a surgery and there is a healing process. Not only that you still need to put a crown on the implant. Root Canals are usually covered by dental insurances by 80% and crowns usually 50% (this all depends on the plan and insurance carrier) while implants IF they are covered, it will be covered at 50% along with the crown at 50%. If I remember correctly, the implant surgery will most likely NOT be covered. Good luck in your decision!Health Question & Answer

Having been through this myself, I would say get the root canal. A crown should last as long as an implant, it's cheaper, and it's usually covered by insurance, at least partially. Many insurance plans will not cover an implant as they consider it to be "cosmetic". Health Question & Answer

Get a second opinion.
If it is agreed there is an abscess, go for the root canal and crown. It lasts a long time 15 to 20 years.
When it gives out, you can pull it and get an implant.Health Question & Answer

Root canal is what I did, just me though it is painful !!,get a good safe dendist so you don't get an infection !good luck with thisHealth Question & Answer

FYI,
THINK LONG TERM.
If it were a front tooth I'd say invest money and get the RC and crown, but since it's a back tooth and nobody will see have it extracted. If you're interested you can get an implant in the future.
ADVANTAGES= relative inexpensive, pain is gone, no future worry of root canal or crown failure and thereby potential extraction. This will compltely resolve the abscess issue which may fail IF a root canal is done.
BTW, root canals have a 95% success rate and if you happen to be in the remaining 5% your S.O.L.Health Question & Answer

Root canal. I had one on a tooth that needed a crown. It was easy to go through. I was tense, so I opted for nitrous, and sat back and relaxed. In fact, they had to use a foam wedge to keep my mouth open because I kept falling asleep. I had a porcelain crown put on and I love the way my tooth looks and it feels great. I have no regrets. A specialist did the root canal and my dentist did the crown. I had it done two years ago. My dentist said that based on how I care for the rest of my teeth, the crown should last a long time. And even if it does need to be replaced in 20 years, I still have my own tooth and roots to put the new crown on. Much less expensive than an implant. And implants aren't always perfect. My grandmother paid a lot of money 5 years ago for a few implants, and one keeps coming off its post. She is very limited in what food she can eat. Keep your own teeth when you are able.Health Question & Answer
