When your mouth is not large enough to accommodate the size or number of teeth (permanent) you have, an orthodontist will often install an appliance called a Palatal Expander. It is usually used in children during their growth stages. My son's was put in at 7. It is a semi-permanant appliance. You use a small key nightly to gradually expand the shape of the mouth to accommodate the number and or size of teeth. It worked REALLY well for my son.
