What is the experience of having your Wisdom Teeth removed like?!

Question: What is the experience of having your Wisdom Teeth removed like.?
It seems I have to have 4 Wisdom Teeth removed. They are in a position where they point toward the mouth. I'm kinda scared cause I hear that it's gonna be real painful and it also has the risk of Nerve Injury. It's like it will be painful if they're not removed and painful when they are removed. I wonder how people long ago lived like this when they didn't have surgery and what not. Can anyone who has had their wisdom tooth/teeth removed tell me what their experience was like .? Do they put your whole body to sleep or just the mouth area (I sure hope it's your whole body).? It's ok if it was a negative or not that bad of a experience. I want to hear both sides. Lots of details from start to finish would be great.Health Question & Answer

your oral surgeon should tell you ahead of time if you will have local anesthetic or will be put under.

my doctor gave me 1 valium to take the morning of the procedure (i also had to take antibiotics for 1 or 2 weeks before the surgery). in retrospect, this did help me relax, but i was still scared. they put me under (all i remember was the doctor put a mask over my face, and I was out -- it was that fast). after the surgery, the nurse woke me up and walked me to a recovery room, where i sat in a big chair for a while. a friend was there to take me home. i was pretty dopey and trying to make jokes, but i didn't realize my mouth was packed with bloody gauze. i pretty much slept for several days straight. my recovery time was about 5 to 7 days. i ate yogurt and soup and slept. my cheeks were all bruised and swollen, but i didn't feel any pain. on the 4th or 5th day i woke up with a bad headache. the doctor had told me to call if i felt any pain at all. they wanted to see me right away. they said i had dry socket. they pack the holes (where the teeth were) with something that looks like shoelaces soaked in clove oil. as soon as the shoelace things touched my jaw, the pain went away immediately. i felt better right away, but then when i stood up, i passed out! for a few days after the surgery i kept finding teeny little shards of tooth stuck in my gums in the back. they have to shatter your teeth in some cases and they might not get all the pieces.

my experience was actually good; i've had other procedures that were much worse. just make sure you have all the antibiotics and painkillers, plenty of time off work, and soft food and movies at home. i also asked all my friends for their stories because it helps me to know the worst. the worst experience i heard was from a friend who found out she was allergic to the painkillers because she kept throwing up after the surgery. that would be pretty bad: no painkillers, and totally sick, too.Health Question & Answer

for 4 that arent erupted, you would be put to sleep. if it was one, we have used a local anestetic before. getting them pulled was the easiest. i was passed out. but i was fine all the way until i started walking out the door. pain meds were my friend. but they took mine too early i think because i had soo much brusieing. it sucks i cant lie. it sucks alot!!!! but in the long run it is soo much better for my dental health!!!Health Question & Answer

I had a horrible experience BUT mine was also a rare surgery. I had 5 wisdom teeth instead of the usual four. The roots of the extra tooth were entangled and compacted with the rooths of the tooth that was supposed to go there. I ended up getting a dry socket in that hole. BUT the other three extractions were fine. They weren't very sore at all. So I think if I didnt have the complicated one, it would have been much better. They put me totally to sleep. Good luck and dont stress about it. It wont help anything and it probably wont be that bad!Health Question & Answer
