The Orthodontist has recommended braces for my almost 9 year old daughter, Is she too young?!

Question: The Orthodontist has recommended braces for my almost 9 year old daughter, Is she too young.?
People are telling me to wait that she might just have to get them again.? Has anyone else been regretful of putting braces on their child that young.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
it depends on her situation. Honestly once the 6 year molars erupt your child is usually ready for braces. often when there is a small problem it is better to do interceptive treatment while the child is still growing. In this situation early treatment is beneficial and can cut down treatment time in the future. I have not seen your child nor have I seen her situation but is she has a cross bite or early loss of teeth or a small dental arch that will most likely lead to crowding in her adult dentition we usually like to treat them earlier (6-10 yrs ). since the body is still growing they are alot more receptive to tooth movements and bony expansion so it can prevent really complicated orthodontic cases. also if your child has lost all her primary teeth at nine which I have seen on more than one occasion there is no reason for her to have ortho done as her mouth is mature. I hope this helps. Health Question & Answer

In ortho treatment, the younger the better chances of having less relapse of the teeth because the bones are still growing.

Ortho in children doesnt mean the orthodontist will bond brackets (braces) to the child's teeth. Brackets are practically placed on teeth that heve formed the apex(tip of the root). It is checked in the x-ray of the patient.

Ortho doesnt just mean braces, there are many appliances used in ortho, like the Hawley's arch wire, Nance's Appliance, Arch widening appliance, and others, which are intended to move the teeth, or to stimulate bone growth and positioning of the teeth.

So please discuss it clearly with the dentist and go to another orthodontist for second opinion.

Hope I helped you with this.Health Question & Answer

well, ask the ortho if she has shed all of her baby teeth and grew out all of her permanent teeth. if that is the case, then the earlier the better and this way your daughter will learn she has to wear her retainers after she is done with her braces. just so you know, it's usually around the age of 12 that the last primary tooth is shed. ask the ortho if she still has any primary teeth. if she doesn't, the earlier she gets braces, the better.

edit!!!!!
not everyone grows out their wisdom teeth. i'm 21 and i never got them. and if she were to grow them out, they would most likely need to come out anyway because they usually hurt people.Health Question & Answer

I am in the eact same situation. I was told by my daughters dentist to take her to the ortho and speak to him about braces. I thought, she was too young for braces, I , myself, have braces as an adult, and I know how much work is needed to keep them clean. My daughter is too young and will get aggravated with the cleaning and monthly check-ups at her age. On my next visit to my ortho, I questioned him about my daughter. He stated she is too young for braces and that he suggests I wait a couple years. He even went as far as saying he will not put braces on children younger than 12.

I have cousins who had braces at a young age and both need them again as adults because their teeth have shifted with the growing of wisdom teeth.

I, myself am waiting to get my daughters when she is a little older, maybe in 2 years.
good luckHealth Question & Answer

Way too young. First she is not old enough to take care of them properly. Second, her jaw has a lot more growing to do. Just wait and do it later so you don't have to do it twice.Health Question & Answer

I think is way too young. And yes some of my daughter's friends have had them twice. Talk to a dentist and get more than one opinion from a ortho. I think we went to 3 or 4 before I decided on one of themHealth Question & Answer

as long as she has her adult teeth or they are pulling the rest of the baby teeth then it is never too early. I had mine put on at 10. I was done by 13. I am 25 and my teeth are still great.Health Question & Answer

it dependes on her case,., coz they said its a lot better if u wait for her wisdom tooth to come out... coz it can change everything...Health Question & Answer
