How well does concious sedation work?!

Question: How well does concious sedation work.?
I need to go to the dentist and have a tooth extracted, but im terrified. They suggested I take a pill for conscious sedation and that I will probably sleep through the entire procedure and wont remember it as well. Has this worked for you and do your really sleep through it.?Health Question & Answer

it works in most of people but some it has the reversed effect that means you might become hyper!!! but this rarely happens. lots of people feel it works, but make sure someone takes you and pick you from there, your not supposed to drive. don't they have inhalation sedation.? i would prefer that to oral sedation
by the way you don't really sleep but it makes you feel drowsy and relaxed. like a floating kind of feelingHealth Question & Answer

I have had conscious sedation but what you described does not sound like conscious sedation. With conscious sedation you may be given a pill to take before your appointment which calms your nerves a little (they may give you a Valium or something similar) and then when you get there they do an I.V. Through this I.V. they put some medication, usually medication called "Versed" (pronounced Ver-set) and this is the conscious sedative. You do not remember what happened to you with this medication, you might remember bits and pieces of things but your mind blocks out all of the pain and most of the memory of what happened while under its affects. It is the only way to go, as far as I am concerned, with any medical or dental procedure! You sit in the chair, they put the medication in the I.V. and then they are telling you it is over - it may have gone on for an hour and you still feel like you just sat down! Once you have had a procedure this way you will never want to go through one again without it. You are lucky your dentist does this and has offered it to you. Check with your insurance co though as they sometimes don't pay for this or only pay a minimal amount for it. I did not care - it was worth every penny! You will need a driver as you may feel sleepy (I was wide awake and fine but did not think driving was a good idea) and they will not let you leave without one, you don't really feel anything before you "go out", you just go out and then are being woken up again. I never had any bad effects afterwards but I guess some people will get a little nauseous, gassy or sleepy. Good luck with your dental care.Health Question & Answer
