How long does it take for blood to stop after extracting a wisdom tooth?!

Question: How long does it take for blood to stop after extracting a wisdom tooth.?
Last night I had a wisdom tooth removed - I can still taste blood (a lot - or so it seems) Worried about the clot not forming - I am not a smoker (but do like wine - which I know can thin the blood ....obviously I am not drinking now lol!) How do you know when the clot has formed and blood has stopped - I don't want to start poking around the hole with my finger or tongue.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
The clot starts to form immediately although some patients will continue to seep blood slightly or heavily for a few hours to a few days. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

It's best not to poke at it with your finger or tongue, you don't want to dislodge the clot causing a dry socket to develop or introduce bacteria in the open site.

The taste of blood is probably what has dried on your tongue, cheek walls, crevices and roof of your mouth. Try brushing gently to clean all areas of your mouth and start rinsing gently with the warm salt water to reduce the bacteria and soothe the tissue as advised in your post op instructions. This will remove the foul taste and make your whole mouth feel much better. Follow all instructions given by your surgeon and keep up with good oral hygiene for a faster recovery with fewer complications.Health Question & Answer
