I got my wisdom tooth (lower) pulled four days ago. Should there be a hole or is it future dry socket?!

Question: I got my wisdom tooth (lower) pulled four days ago. Should there be a hole or is it future dry socket.?
There is not throbbing pain other than what would be considered typical, but there is a hole where the tooth was. It had been clotted over, but now it is mostly gone. Is dry socket going to happen.?Health Question & Answer

Not if you follow the dentist's instructions and keep your tongue and fingers out of there. Of course there's a ruddy big hole there, the dentist removed a honking big tooth. The hole will fill in with gum over the next weeks and months, eventually evening up the gum. During that time, you need to keep it clean, brush your teeth and swish rinse to remove any trapped bits of food. As long as you have followed the aftercare instructions, your odds for a dry socket are pretty good in favor of not developing one. However, should you develop a nagging pain in the jawbone, below the gum where the tooth was- that's a dry socket. The term refers to the hole in the bone where the tooth roots were anchored. When the tooth was removed, it left a hole in the jawbone, tooth sized. The bone clotted that off, and begins to repair the hole. If the clot is lost before the gum is able to seal it all off, the bone is exposed to air and saliva. The bone dehydrates- that is, it dries out. Hence, dry socket. It's not the gums, it's the bone that dehydrates. For right now, and for about the next couple days it is a possible complication. If you begin to feel that nagging pain in the jaw- not inside your mouth mind you- in the bone of the jaw- find yourself a nice teabag. Make a cup of tea, then chomp on the wet, warm teabag. Give the dentist a call, and return to the office. They will pack it nicely, which will fix the trouble. The teabag will keep you somewhat comfy in transit. Meanwhile, follow the directions, and you should do fine.Health Question & Answer

No, at four days post op you should be in the clear of developing a dry socket; those usually occur within the first 2-3 days. The hole can take months to cover over since the layers of tissue are being laid closest to the bone first. A lot of the time and depending on the tooth size of course, the extraction of the 3rd molar leaves a slight indentation or small hole where the tooth once was. Perfectly normal, I have them myself. Keep up with excellent oral hygiene and using the really warm salt water rinses to promote a fast recovery with fewer complications.Health Question & Answer

In theory a dry socket is possible is the socket bone is exposed. Normally the dry socket occurs right after the extravtion, you shold have looked at just incase. The dentist may elect to irrigate the hole and place some alveolar dressing to close it up some more.Health Question & Answer
