It really hard unless they are big. Look at your teeth do you see brown spots on the chewing surface, or on the sides of the tooth.? The brown spots may be stains or they may be cavities but you will need x rays and a dentist to determine that. also some people brush well and dont floss so from the outside the teeth look helathy but the the area in bwteen the teeth cavities can form and with out an x ray they are not as easy to spot. also you need to keep in mind that the outside of the tooth breaks down a lot slower then the inside. so a small cavity on the outside is like a floating ice berg you only seeing a small portion of what truly is going on.

Go to the denitis for and exam and xrays , then once they tell you if you have anything and if you do consider sedation. Health Question & Answer

Sometimes you are actually able to see little holes in your teeth, but at that point they've gotten pretty bad. You may have pain when eating/drinking something hot, cold, or sweet. Some people just have sensitive teeth however so that's not always a good indication unless the pain is really bad say when you bite on something. You may just start to have a tooth ache that doesn't go away. Many times there are no indications at all until its too late.

I understand having a phobia of dentists, but if you think you have a cavity you really should get it checked out. Its not worth losing a tooth over. Try to look for a dentist that specializes in fearful patients. Best of luck! =)Health Question & Answer

No you really can't .. The closest you can come to it is to get an over the counter tool from a store , it looks like a little metal pick. ( in the toothbrush isle). You can stick in the tops of your teeth and see if there are any areas that are soft and sticky if the pick goes into it. Cavities feel like sticky gum holes in your teeth.

As someone who works for a dentist and has been an assistant for many years, you really need a check up. Even if its just once a year. The more you avoid the dentist, the more problems you will have. Dentistry is NOT like it was many years ago. It is pain free now, I promise. There is no need to be afraid. I see people all the time who come in the office who avoided it for years and have the most cavities I have ever seen, its really gross. And not only that, they have so much bone loss under the gums that their teeth are literally ready to fall out. Get a check up. 99.9 % of dental problems are not seen by the naked eye.
