Your dentist will be able to tell if the infection is significantly gone enough to do the procedure on. It is dangerous to get any dental work done with an infection as this infection can spread though your blood stream and cause a lot of other problems including death. You also may need a different type of pain medication, that is why there are so many different ones on the market. This particular one may not work very well at all for you and that is something you can tell your dentist when you go in tomorrow - that you took the pain medication exactly as he prescribed but got no pain relief from it and is there something else he can give you.? There is no problem with this, I had to change from Vicodin to Percocet since the Vicodin never seemed to help me. This is something that is now part of my medical and dental charts so that I don't have to keep repeating it over and over any time I have a procedure done. By tomorrow your antibiotics may very well have kicked in and the infection will be under control - it sometimes happens this way, it takes several days and then seems to be fine the next day - but be sure and mention to your dentist if it is still in a lot of pain for you and you are not comfortable with him/her doing the procedure. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.Health Question & Answer

when infxn(infection) is bad, just pain medicine is not enough. you need antibiotic too (even this combo still may not get you out of pain). medicine doesn't do anything to the source of pain and infxn which is bad nerve. so, to make sure you are out of pain, you need to at least start RCT(root canal therapy) which is opening the tooth, try to clean out bad nerve and infxn as much as possible, washing inside and drying and put medicine. temporary filling ( if puss is coming out, some dentists would prefer leaving the tooth open, so that puss can be drained out). after at least you start RCT, pain will get a lot better (not always , but most of the time). whether to do RCT or not is upto the dentist.Health Question & Answer

* It's the pressure of the burgeoning infection. They should perform the first portion of the root canal, clean out the infection, put you on antibiotics, then have you back for the post and crown.Health Question & Answer
