Root canal and crowns?!

Question: Root canal and crowns.?
Hello all. I had a root canal session on one of my lower teeth about two years ago. Its cause me no problems though has turned a bit grey as it would considering its a dead tooth. My new dentist wants to put a crown on it this week and i'd just like to know why this is.? Is it definitely worth doing.? Will the tooth weaken with time otherwise.? Im not bothered about the look of it as its far back. Many thanks.Health Question & Answer

I'm assuming this is a molar so you need to get it crowned. The farther back you go in a mouth the greater the biting forces exhibited. Molar teeth should always be crowned after a root canal to prevent them from fracturing due to the chewing forces they are subjected to. Consider the analogy to a tree that has died. At first it still stands and, other than lost leaves, looks ok.....eventually, it will break and fall down. The same thing will eventually happen to a molar....break and probable extraction. The thing is, we don't know when that will happen but the longer the wait the greater the chance. Your doc is telling you the truth.Health Question & Answer

if a tooth is heavily filled and also root filled (which makes it weaker) it is more sceptical to breaking. If the tooth breaks then sometimes it can be harder to build it up in order to crown it.

I am sure that your dentist is offering you a crown as a preventative measure...but it is your choice. You can either crown it now and hope that this will strengthen it and have no further problems, or leave it , and should it break and/or decay in the meantime you are just risking a more serious restoration.. especially if it is already heavily filled,

hope that makes sense!Health Question & Answer

Root canal is to cut a nerve in your gum. Then a decayed tooth can be easily removed, without pain. After a while when the gums heel up, the artificial tooth must be placed, to reduce the damage, that might be caused while chewing your food. The artificial tooth is a technical word for an artificial tooth. It can be gold, silver, or even ceramic.Health Question & Answer

Root canal treatment means removing the whole pulp of the tooth, which would results in cutting all blood or nerve supply to it which would eventually leads to loss of fluids in the structures of a tooth.

Loss of fluids makes the tooth very brittle and susceptible for fracture under loads of stresses e.g chewing.

In addition removing the pulp tissue requires big fillings, another element is making the tooth prone to break one day in the future.

As a dentist I advise you crown it and fast.Health Question & Answer
