10 Year old just got mouth braces?!

Question: 10 Year old just got mouth braces.?
My 10 year old just got mouth braces today. Earlier when she got the braces everything was fine and now (evening time) she says that she is in so much pain. Not pain from the braces hitting her mouth or cutting her lip or anything like that. The kind of pain that she is describing is like a hurting discomfort type of pain. Like a tightening pain. Is there anything besides Advil/Tylenol that can be taken for the discomfort of braces.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
im 13 and i got braces when i was eleven.
i know exactly what she is going through!
i took tylenol and stuff, and that worked.
but i would reccommend eating soft foods like pudding and applesauce and soup and things like that for the next few days, or however long her teeth still hurt.
my orthodontist told me to drink very cold water or suck on an ice cube if my teeth really hurt, because cold helps loosen the wires to make it less tight.
also let her know that she will be feeling this kind of pain (but not as bad) everytime she gets her braces tightened!

hope i helped.

p.s also tell her that its worth the pain because when she gets her braces off, cause she'll have nice, straight teeth like mine!
haha.Health Question & Answer

I suggest you take advantage of the "placebo effect." Get some sugar free mints at the store, and put them in an old prescription medicine bottle, or some pretty glass bottle with a hint of magic to it. Tell your daughter that they are special medicine to help with the pain, and that she will get a new bottle every time her braces are adjusted (the tightening pain will start anew each time).

The mints will give your daughter something enjoyable to take her mind off the pain. Even if she figures out they are not really a drug (which she probably will) she'll probably enjoy them enough that she will look forward to getting her braces adjusted. Little rituals like this work wonders!

The topical numbing agents like Ambusol won't help at all for this pain, as it is not surface pain. Ice could make it worse. Wax won't help with the tightening pain--only helpful if there are skin contusion problems. Tylenol is better than Advil; aspirin works best, but some doctors worry about Reyes Syndrome with aspirin (I think it is a bunch of hooey, but what do I know.?)

Good luck with this.Health Question & Answer

Ah, the tightening pain. Don't forget the wax. Wax helps it all on sores that develop on the side of her mouth. If your orthodontist didn't explain it to you already, take a small piece of wax and place it on the area of brackets/braces that are discomforting.

As an orthodontic, the best suggestion we can give her is to take a nap, relax, and eat lightly. This tightening pain is often described, and often treated for with Tylenol. We don't suggest Advil, or I don't, anyway.

However, comfort her in this time of need. Children 9+ don't really feel pain until the next day. Explain to her that they WILL be sore tomorrow, and will cause quite a lot of discomfort. She can not eat hard things, such as chips, sandwiches, not even Chicken Noodle Soup. Smoothies and slushie drinks are often filling, healthy, and less painful.

I hate to break it to your daughter, but tomorrow, most people can barely talk. However, my daughter, who is thirteen, got braces a week ago and only felt extreme discomfort on the second day, and it gradually decreased. She is no longer in pain.

I hope she feels better, and if you have any questions,

When I first got my braces on, I just ate lots of cold soft foods. I lived on slurpies & milkshakes! =] haha. It just takes some getting used to. I can relate to the "tightening pain" she is referring to. Whenever I get mine adjusted or anything, it feels really tight. Really, with some Motrin, Ambesol, & some soft foods, she'll be fine eventually. Best wishes.Health Question & Answer

you should talk to her orthodontist, they can give her these squishy jelly bean sorta things that she can chew on that take away lots of the pain. the tightening pain is normal, just means that the braces are working. she will experience it most likely every time she gets her braces tightened. if you think about it, her teeth are moving from their current place. Health Question & Answer

Cold water, Ice cream, (both numb it) Motrin, (pain reliever) or putting Ambesol on the areas where it hurts (pain relieving gel for your mouth, will numb it)Health Question & Answer

you can have her suck on some ice and put Oracle on in a couple of days the pain will go away it also mean that it is workingHealth Question & Answer

You should just give her Tylenol but that tightening is normal. I had braces and got them off about a year ago. that pain hurts but it doesn't last forever.Health Question & Answer

Painkillers permanently numb senses. I would not recommend anything strong for braces. Health Question & Answer

Give her hybuprophen. But the pain should go in about 3 days and she wount even feel a thing.Health Question & Answer
