I agree with Ryan that you should take some sort of pain reliever - like advil or tylenol. That'll help. I don't remember the actual putting on of the braces to be painful - but once they're there - yes their painful. also, don't think you are going to talk so well. I didn't know that and I worked that night. No one could understand me and I felt so stupid when I tried to talk. The first night I could hardly make any words sound right. It took me about a week to be able to make the S sound again.

A lot of the pain is the braces rubbing against your lips and the inside of your mouth. They'll give you wax to soften it - USE THE WAX. It is so much better to keep it from rubbing a sore than it is to put the wax on after you already have a sore - then the wax just pushes against the sore.

It also hurts to chew. Stock up on foods that don't require chewing - like yogurt, milk shakes and smoothies, rice, mashed potatoes, pudding. Eat your last big meal before you get your braces. I was hungry a lot when I had my braces because it was harder to eat and took me so much longer. I would wait as long as I could to eat so I didn't have to clean all the food out of there again so soon, I would eat until I was too sore to chew more, out of time at lunch, or bored of eating, but I didn't get full often.

With time you'll get used to things. You'll learn to eat a big meal before you get your braces tightened, you'll get used to having the braces and by the time you get them off it'll be weird to not have them. Remember, don't miss your appointments unless you absolutely have to or else you'll have them on there a lot longer than you want to. Health Question & Answer

they'll hurt for a few days, I'd recommend taking a few tylenol right after getting them on, and continue taking the recommended dose when they start hurting again. You also won't be able to eat solid foods for the first day, because your teeth will be moving around a little. also, it will feel like you have really puffy lips, because the braces are pushing against them...
Word of advice: Don't get punched in the mouth, it will hurt like a @**$$# (from personal experience!)Health Question & Answer

I just got my braces on yesterday, and they didn't hurt until a few hours after, so make sure you eat something good and solid the night before, something you know you wont be able to eat for a while, and something light for breakfast, throwing up on the person taking the impressions probably won't be too thrilling to them, I was pretty close to it, a day later mine still hurt, the orthodontist recommended i take tylenol or ibuprofen (i chose tylenol extra strength gel caps since they work fast) and that it should stop being tender after about four days.Health Question & Answer

Yes.
BUT they only hurt for about a week after.
Take a pain reliever before you get them on ( i recommend motrin because it is an inflammatory) Stock up on soft foods. Start off with foods like pudding and soup, then after a few days you should be able to check other foods.
They hurt the most in the morning, it's really bad. Sorry! Just take pain reliever right away or in the middle of the night if you need to.
They WILL get beter and soon it will be like they are not even there!

I get my mom to buy me Slurpee's, and Popsicles whenever i get them tightened, you should ask for some too. It's a nice treat!Health Question & Answer

Haha..

I have had braces for 4 months now. I cant BELIEVE the pain.

Right when you get your braces on, you feel very weird. It feels like someone is hammering at your teeth, and trying to rip them out, all at the same time. I couldnt eat for a whole day straight when I got them. The pain for me lasted a week.

Once the week's over, you should be fine. That is.. until you get your braces tightened. I cried, and even had to stay home from school my first and second time.

xD

Sorry to scare ya, but you wanted the truth!Health Question & Answer

I got both top and bottom on at the same time...it didn't hurt that much..like the next day when u wake up and a few days after that it hurts. or feels werid like ur teeth are loose...just depends on ur type of teeth..mine wheren't that painful..but alot of ppl i know that got braces after me...complained for over 2weeks to get attention...it was bad..but yea..Health Question & Answer

They don't hurt when you get them put on, but for the 3 following days after that, it's hell. After that, its just the pain of getting them tightened and such. The worst part is getting them off, but when it's over, you're so relieved! Your teeth will look amazing! Just remember, sleeping doesn't hurt!
:)Health Question & Answer

No. It'll hurt for a week after each time they get adjusted but when they put them on they're just cementing the brackets into place. Health Question & Answer
