I had a frenectomy about a year and a half ago after five long years of braces! I also work as an oral surgery assistant and have assisted with this procedure many many times.

It did feel a little strange at first, but I quickly got used to the feeling and I'm so glad that I had it done. Trust me, your lip won't hang loose. My teeth look great now. My speech was perfectly normal the same day and aside from some pain and swelling for about three days I didn't have any side effects.

I've never heard of anyone requiring speech therapy or speech exercises afterward.?.? I've also never heard of this procedure being performed with a lazer, but I suppose its possible.

I will tell you that you will be very sore for a few days, but the benefit is greater than the discomfort!

Best of luck with whatever you decide!
Health Question & Answer

A frenectomy may be the only way to correct your problem. It isn't a painful procedure and will not effect your speech.

The procedure requires a small cut which will free the tissue from the gum at the lip, relaxing this muscle and tissue so that the teeth will not be pushed apart by it. You may or may not have a suture. The whole procedure takes about 30 seconds to preform. Your lip won't hang loose or feel weird, you will still have complete control over your whole mouth. The only problem associated with this procedure is that some patients may smile with a little more upper gum showing as a result of the frenectomy.

Discuss this with your orthodontist or dentist, they should be able to tell you how the procedure will effect your smile. Although, not having it done will definitely leave you with a gap if there is too much muscle tissue in between the teeth.Health Question & Answer

this can be quite painful, unless if its done with a laser, ask your dentist, speech will be difffernet at first, but you will be asked to do some word exercises to help. as long as the bleeding is under control it should be okay, the muscle there is so tough it causes your teeth in the front to seperate. your lip probably wont hang loose, it may feel like it though.Health Question & Answer
