How many temporary crowns are normal?!

Question: How many temporary crowns are normal.?
I had three sets of temporary crowns put in over the same four front teeth. each time my doctor is charging me almost $600 each and says that the next time I come in he will put in the permanent ones, but instead gives me temps.
My roommate said he met a dentist at a party and was telling him about how much i have spent so far, and the second doctor told him usually only one round of temporary crowns is required.
I am non confrontational, and before i tell my current doctor I am taking my business elsewhere, i was hoping to confirm with any one else if this is normal, and if so, how many more temps should I expect to pay for.? if it's not, any one got an office in San Diego.?
Thank you

Answers:
Your roomate seems correct.
Generally only one set of temporary crowns are needed. In our office the fee for temporary crown is usually included in the fee for the crown.
Occasionally I will charge for temporary crowns if:
1: I need to have them fabricated off-site. This is done in special esthetic cases. I usually only do this for front (anterior) teeth, one set only and charge about 60-75 $ per temporary (my lab fee). or
2: I must temporize the tooth for a long time before the definitive work is done.
Ask for an explanation. You don't need to be confrontational to receive one. You are correct in assuming something is not right. Any doctor who is practicing with integrity will welcome questions.Health Question & Answer

Are you sure that you are paying for temporary crowns only.? Maybe you are actually paying for the permanent crowns and your doc is waiting for the full payment before seating them. If your permanent crowns are paid for, you are getting scammed big time because usually only one set of temps are needed in order to give the lab time to make the permanent ones. You don't have to be confrontational, but you certainly can and should request an itemized bill so that you know what you are paying for. Health Question & Answer
