My dentist told me I can only chew sugarless gum...?!

Question: My dentist told me I can only chew sugarless gum....?
My dentist said I have two developing cavities, so I need to floss every day and chew only sugarless gum. I don't want the artificial sweeteners though!! I would give it up all together, but for some weird reason, gum is my brainfood-it helps me think. I've gone a couple of days w/o chewing and I really want to chew some-what can I do.? I know you don't want artificial sweeteners but look for the ones with xylitol in! They have an antibacterial effect so will actually help to prevent cavities, Orbit is quite a good one! Don't buy one that doesn't have xylitol in though! IT's either that or you lose your teeth! I am addicted to chewing gum and (touch wood) haven't had a cavity since chewing xylitol chewing gum. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

Sugar filled gum is most likely why you have two developing cavities. Switching to sugarless gum can help you avoid going to the dentist and discovering you have 9 cavities. I myself was absolutely hooked on gum, and I swore by Extra sugarless spearmint for a long time. If I had to choose between artificial sweeteners and cavities, I would take the artificial sweeteners. Just do your research if you're concerned about the sweeteners.Health Question & Answer

most of artificial sugar doesn't cause decay. like prev person noted, xylitol has anti cariogenic ( preventing decay) effect. I think they taste just as good. chewing gum is good for teeth ( unless it has decay causing sugar) because it promotes salivation and saliva has anticariogenic component. this is one of the reasons why old people or anyone with salivation problem are more prone to decay. I kind of remember reading in a dental journal that chewing xylitol gum 5 min after each meal helps prevent decay. Health Question & Answer

chew orbit or other sugarless gum. just look on the package of most mint gumHealth Question & Answer
