I broke 90% of my tooth: there's a small piece still there though: the gums near it are puffy and painful?!

Question: I broke 90% of my tooth: there's a small piece still there though: the gums near it are puffy and painful.?
Aside from going to the dentist (I don't have dental insurance and can't get to one for at least another three weeks) - what can I do to ease the pain.? Why is it swollen.? Is it because I lost part of the tooth but not all of it (there's this small piece still there, it feels like when you get the skin from popcorn stuck on your gums - that's how small it is).?

Thanks for any suggestions (except going to the dentist - I know I have to do this, I just need a remedy until I can).Health Question & Answer

You can buy some anesthetic called Anbesol at any store near you. It should be in the dental aisle. Just swab some around your affected gum area. You can also take Motrin or Advil for the inflammation. Remember to take it with food or you'll get an upset stomach.Health Question & Answer

First you should contact you state dental association and see if they have dentist that will do pro bono work. and then have the denist look at it.

puffy ness means the gums are irritated, that is that little peice is harboring bacteria which is aggravating the tissue , as for easing thepain, anbesol will work, and iburprofen for longer effectiveness, maybe rinsing with salt water will help control the bacteria concentration. But the area wont heal until that piece is removed becareful about doing it youself because with out x rays you dont really know how much is there, and the instrument you use are not sterile. But the stuff I mentioned will buy you some time. Health Question & Answer

1 save any pieces you may have of the tooth because the dentist may be able to use this in the reconstruction of the tooth.
2 ambisol is good because it numbs the area and kind of freezes the nerves like dentist do.
3 When you do go to the dentist (he or she) will do a root canal if there is enuf there to reconstruct.
I did the same thing to my tooth when I was a teen and the dentist made it look like it never happened. good luck!! Health Question & Answer

You should not wait 3 weeks! An infection in your head (swelling) is dangerous....This is the most important point, this is nothing to fool around with....
This will not be an expensive procedure, and any waiting may cause much worse situations than a simple tooth procedure...hope you have good medical insurance.Health Question & Answer

I say don't eat any rough things. Liquids are heaven. Obviously I recommend going to dentist asap! Lol but anyways just don't eat tough things like chips, and if you do, do it at the opposite end of that tooth in your mouth. Like if the broken tooth is on left, eat on the right etc.

Hope you get better :)

PS - Don't brush too hard... and try flossing.Health Question & Answer
