Like the previous person said, if you can actually see the cavity or feel it, it is bad.

Most cavities that are diagnosed early are not visible to the patient and can only be seen on an xray or detected with the small dental instruments.

If you are having symptoms, that means that the cavity has progressed a fair distance into your tooth. If you are having sensitivity, the cavity needs to be addressed asap. If you are having pain, there is a good chance that you will need a root canal and subsequently a crown, or possibly an extraction.

Cavities can progress fairly quickly. Meaning, if you haven't been to the dentist in over a year (or years), you may have cavities that have been present in your mouth for a fair amount of time; which is not good.

Hopefully you can get your insurance soon so you can get seen. FYI, many dentists will see you regardless of if you have insurance or not (and may give you a discounted fee).
Health Question & Answer

There is no way to tell how "bad" they are without x-rays. A "bad" cavity means it is deep into the tooth. Obviously, if you can visibly see the cavity, it is already bad. After a tooth starts to hurt, it is getting a little too late. Usually you want to find the cavity when it is small. When they are small they are usually only detected by the dentist because they are not visible to the eye and they do not hurt. So the patient are unaware they are there until the dentist tells them. That's when you want to find a cavity.... The longer you wait, they deeper they get and the more chance of a root canal or tooth extraction. Health Question & Answer

Cavities are holes in your teeth caused by tooth decay. If they hurt, they are bad. If they look bad, they may just be superficial and require treatment for cosmetic reasons - but the longer you don't attend to them the worse they will get, eventually they will cause tooth loss.Health Question & Answer

cavities usually break, fall out, get chipped, need to be replaced, etc. every few years. it depends on how well your dentist does them and what your diet and daily habbits are like. they should last at least 5-10 years.Health Question & Answer
