Acid in drinks that effect teeth .. ?!

Question: Acid in drinks that effect teeth .. .?
So i know that their are special acids in like soda, pepsi, coca cola, and like orange juice and stuff.

The kind of acid that like eats away at the enamel on our teeth, but i was wondering if like flavored water would have that same acid, because lately for a while i have been drinking flavored water only like that's all i drink, but ive noticed my two from teeth have gotten thinner near the bottom like its very weird; i will have to check with my dentist but could this be because flavored water has the same acid that soda does.?

I was trying to avoid the harm full stuff that is in soda by drinking flavored water, or are there the same acids that affect teeth.?

PS: I wasn't sure if this should go into the Dental section.?

The first person to answer your question is correct. If you have an acidic drink and brush right after it can damage your teeth over time.

It's important to note that it's not the acid in those drinks that cause you to get cavities (eat the enamel off your teeth) but it is this: You drink or eat ANYTHING with sugar, the specific cavity bacteria that eat that sugar to keep growing in your mouth do so, then their byproduct is what eats your enamel thus giving you the cavity.

It is also not only that you eat/drink stuff with sugar, but more importantly it is the frequency that you do so. If you down a coke, or flavored water (with sugar) in 20 minutes that is so much better for your teeth than if you sip on it all day. Each time you sip on a sugary drink or eat something with sugar, it takes your mouth 20-30 minutes to get it back to a normal pH. So if you are constantly drinking all day, you will get cavities faster.

So it's not the acid that will do this, but if you are drinking a flavored water like Vitamin Water with sugar, then you can get cavities.

However, where you are describing it getting thinner, you generally don't get cavities there. You do get thinning of the enamel near the bottom of your front teeth as you age...or if you tend to throw up after eating. (not suggesting that you do that, just describing how people get that).

Your best bet is to go to your dentist and let him know your concern. Since he can physically see what's going on, he will be best able to help you.Health Question & Answer
