Tooth pulled over 72 hrs ago..What can i do..? Is this normal..?!

Question: Tooth pulled over 72 hrs ago..What can i do...? Is this normal...?
I had molar (bottom left #18) taken out over 72 hours ago. I can see the blood clot and slight greyish covering over it ..which i guess is part of the heeling process.. I'm not really in pain every once in a while my jaw will twitch and on other occasions i'll get either a a quick sharp/or dull feeling of pain. (Sidenote on my cheek, where my jaw joint is. It is slightly swollen and it has a very slight burning feeling..is this normal..its not really painful just distracting i guess.) So yea ..since im pretty sure i dont have dry socket..hiw careful do i have to be.? Can i use a straw.? Can i upgrade from yogurt and stuff.?Health Question & Answer

Well if you see the blood clot then you don't have dry socket. BELIEVE ME, you would be in utter pain if you did.

DO NOT use a straw, smoke or do anything with a sucking motion. This would encourage a dry socket.

As far as the burning in your jaw joint...are you keeping your mouth positioned in a certain way that is not letting it rest; like trying to avoid putting your mouth a certain way to avoid hurting the extraction site.? If you are stressing the muscle then you might notice it. HTH, and if anything, your dentist/oral surgeon should have a number to call with any questions, even on the weekend. If you are unsure, call them. That is what they are there for.Health Question & Answer

When any sort of swelling, I would always contact your dentist. Most dentist have an emergency after hours number you can call. The antibiotics should help with the swelling. I would place cold ice on it for 15-20 mins. Do this several times through out the day. Just don't place heat on it! Heat will increase the swelling.

I think yogurt should be fine, I always recommend apple sauce and mashed potatoes. BUT DON'T USE A STRAW. There is a blood clot in there (which is what you want), but you donut want it to come out. Any sort of sucking motion (like using a straw, smoking, or water bottle) can cause it to come out. That is whats called dry socket and it is very painful.

Sounds like you are healing great, I would just call and ask about the swelling. The burning/pain is normal.Health Question & Answer

this sounds normal. the slight greyin covering is the clot, leave that alone dont touch it or you will expose the bone.

the twitching is also normal it means that the jaw is healing and unfortunately it involves an imflammation respose feel hot at times.

If you had a dry socket you would have known right away it is worse than the worst tooth ache. Girls how have had dry sockets and a child will say that it was more painful than giving birth.

Dont use a straw

For most people the healing process avg's 2 weeks so the are can stay sore fo a while. In theory it can take up 6 weeks to completely heal.
