What do I watch for when a baby tooth has had trauma and knocked loose?!

Question: What do I watch for when a baby tooth has had trauma and knocked loose.?
My 7 year old fell and knocked her tooth loose (the one on top, right next to top two front - I don't know the name of the tooth) - it was barely loose before she fell, now it is very loose (like hanging on - fallen down a bit, but not so loose that it will fall out) and sore. We have put ice on it, given her motrin, called the dentist (it was an on call doc - her regular dentist is out of town - and this guy was a jerk), we were told to watch for infection, give her soft food and call on Monday for regular dentist.

My question is - will there be any sign of infection in her mouth, or just her not feeling well and a fever.?

The gum is bruised, is there a problem from that.?

As I said, I will call our regular doc on Monday - but wanted to know in the meantime if there is something else I should be doing.

Thanks in advance.Health Question & Answer

This actually happened to my son when he was a baby. He fell and hit his teeth and made one loose (he was only about a year old). We were told by the dentist to keep an eye on it and if it changed colors or started to look "infected" (i.e. puss, swelling that didn't subside after a few days, immense pain, etc.), then to come back to have it pulled. The dentist told us that as long as it wasn't loose enough to fall out, it would probably "reset" itself, which it did thankfully. Within a few days it was not loose anymore. Granted, he was a baby, but you should probably be fine until Monday when you can see the dentist. If it changes color or hurts her too much, I would definitely call the on-call dentist again or go to the ER, but it sounds like you'll be fine until Monday.

Over time a tooth that has trauma will yellow or have mobility, good thing is that its a baby tooth and they will fall out soon. might want to get her to the Dr to check in an x-ray how far behind the permant teeth are from coming in. the other thing that can be an indication that it was inevitable was if the tooth does come out and there are no roots attached. i'm sure that this isnt her first tooth to come out, if it's not.? do these teeth look like the rest when they fall out.?

If it's a baby tooth there's nothing you need to do until the dentist can see it on Monday. If it's a permanant tooth (doubt it at her age) then is should be seen within a few hours of the injury. A bruised gum is not anything to worry about either. It will be sore for her and she should stick to soft food at room temp for comfort then have her rinse her mouth with water after eating anything to keep it as clean as possible. If an infection develops, and I doubt it will, you are right, you would know by a fever and maybe some severe swelling of the site. Some swelling may be normal depending on where her gums were hit. The dentist may end up pulling it for her on Monday if it's too loose to eat normally but not loose enough to fall out on it's own. Health Question & Answer
