They do a mold of your teeth so in the end you can know what they use to look like and also so them they can see what they need to change and the right measurements. In the end when you get them taken off they make you have another mold so they can fit your retainers on. The mold is horrible because they make you nearly gag so just remember when they put the top one on to breath out strongly and to just keep breathing and don't touch your tongue on the top.
