When having braces it is alot harder to keep the teeth clean. If calculus goes down the sides of the gums, between the teeth and the gum it starts to eat away at the teeth, gums and bone (if you dont do something about it). but early on, the gums become inflamed, sore or red and swollen. This just means there is a little bit or calculus and bacteria inbetween the tooth and gum, to get rid of it you will have to have the band off, and just keep brushing your teeth. Sometimes the dentist may try and remove the calculus for you. You just need to keep brushing, and eventually it will go. However when brushing dont scrub!! (this wears your gums away, and takes the enamel off the teeth, which makes them sesitive). Always move your toothbrush in a circular motion, and so it is on the tooth and the gum.

hope this helps. (Im a qualified dental nurse)Health Question & Answer
