A slight bleeding is never normal and is always an indication of an irritation to the tissue somewhere in the mouth. This can be from brushing too hard or incorrectly, using too hard of a toothbrush (always use a soft bristle toothbrush) or and as in most cases, this is an early sign of gingivitis.

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the tissue that is caused by plaque build up under the tissue that hardens forming calculus and tartar. This hardened calculus and tartar rest on the root of the tooth just under the loose gingival tissue, it is very rough to the tissue and the roughness causes it to collect bacteria more easily, forming more plaque which turns into the hardened calculus and tartar, all of which will keep the tissue irritated and inflamed making it easy to bleed during brushing or flossing. Once formed, it can't be removed by simply brushing and flossing, it must be removed with special instruments by a trained professional hygienist. If left untreated this will become much worse developing into periodontal disease; this starts as gingivitis, then the inflamed areas develop deep pockets that contain the bacteria causing infections and periodontial abscesses along with a loss of tissue attachment, loss of periodontal ligaments, bone loss and eventual loss of teeth.

Since you stated you haven't seen your dentist is a few years, it's probably time to have a good professional cleaning and an evaluation by your dentist.Health Question & Answer

your gums are actually the problem there not strong enough and you probroally started to brush them with your tooth brush which is actually a good idea it may bleed at first but you have to brush your gums.. if you brush them than your gums will be stronger and you can take more force such as flossing and when you get teeth pulled there will be less blood.. nothing to worry at all just make sure you brush your gums and keep it a habbit it also helps with bad breath it may bleed for about a week or so but it is worth it and your gums will be healthier!!Health Question & Answer

Sounds like gingivitis (inflammation of the gums due to lack of flossing and the presence of plaque). Sounds like it's time for a cleaning by your dentist. In the meantime, floss and use an antiseptic mouthwash.Health Question & Answer
