My orthodontist advises me to use fluoride rinse?!

Question: My orthodontist advises me to use fluoride rinse.?
I hear that fluoride is actually bad for your teeth, causes sensitivity, and makes teeth less white. I got braces a few weeks ago and my ortho kept reminding me to get a fluoride rinse to prevent decay; do I really need to use the fluoride rinse.? I bought the Listerine Smart Rinse junk to comply, but I really prefer just regular Listerine or Scope. Should I just stop using the fluoride and stick with regular mouthwash.? I have braces also and was advised to use a Fluoride Rinse. My ortho gave me samples of Gel Kam [which is a fluoride gel that your brush with after brushing your teeth], he also gave me Phos Flur [which is a fluoride rinse]. I tried both and much rather the rinse. It tastes just like Scope and works well. I use once a day [at night] after I brush, before bedtime.

If I were you, I would just follow my ortho's orders as he is the professional and more than likely wouldnt have you use something that is bad for your teeth.Health Question & Answer

It's a personal choice. Dentists are drilled in school to believe fluoride is the only choice for preventing decay- and they rarely change course.

Ask any holistic professional about fluoride and they'll tell you it's a dangerous toxin. Avoid or minimize sweets especially sticky sweet etc and floss and brush often. (w/o a fluoride toothpaste)Health Question & Answer

I've never heard that flouride is bad for your teeth. I absolutely think that the orthodontist's expertise is better than your hearsay. I mean, he or she has studied teeth for years. also, why don't you get a flouride rinse that has whitening properties to it if you are worried.? Tom's of Maine has one that's all natural.Health Question & Answer

well if your orthodontist insists that you use a flouride rinse then i suggest you listen to him/her... since he/she knows your teeth better than you do!
he/she will not tell you to use something if it's not good for you anyway! so use it and if you are not satisfies then just stop using it and stick with the mouthwash!
there's no harm in trying... ^__^

Health Question & Answer

Actually flouride helps with sensitivity. I use the new purple Flouride Listerine and it's helped alot. I also use Flouridex toothpaste which my dentist recommends to use before and after you get your teeth whitened to avoid sensitivity. Health Question & Answer
