Question: Do you think dentistry is a good field.?
I'm currently studying medical sciences at edinburgh university, and thinking of doing medicine or dentistry but can't really decide which one.?

The most important question do you enjoy intricate manual work and are you good with your hands, being a dentist obvoiusly requires many skills but fundamentally you have to enjoy and have an appitude for intricate manual work as this is really what 70% of your time will be spent doing, i knew many ecellent acedimic studentas who excelled at uni but at the end of the day the didnt enjoy or perhaps were not as good at that actual clinical work and so never really got satisfaction from the job and dont enjoy itHealth Question & Answer
I am not sure about the UK, but no I don't think being a dentist is a good choice. Just like being a family doctor isn't a good choice any more either. The best choice is to either do dental hygiene where school cost less but pay is still pretty good, or go into a dental specialty such as ortho or endo or oral surgeon. Dentist pay so much out in schooling and then pile more debt on top of that to supply and open an office. It will take you a very long time just to pay that debt off and by the time you get close some of your equiptment will be so out of date you will start over. Dental supplies have gotten so outrageous that unless you are in a specialty that pays really well or a very big city with a great practice or sharing a practice, things are too unpractical. yeh go for it, it depends whether u wanno check ppls teeth for all ur life or deal with a wide range of medical problems in the hopital or sumthing. i think both field give high pay, so which ever u prefer in terms of the day- to day tasks. personally if i was clever in medical sciences then i would choose medicine as there are more varied tasks. but there are far more years in medicine than dentistry. u choose ur preferance. best of luck xxxxHealth Question & Answer
