have you never had a cavity.? It takes just a few minutes and most likely NO, you will not feel pain after novacaine wears off. Of course this all depends on just how BAD the cavity is..But based on what your saying, we're not talking root canal here. So, don't worry it will be a breeze.Health Question & Answer

Every dentist offers a variety of pain management services. For a single filling, it's usually simply a local anesthetic administered through a needle into the gum of the affected area. Nicer dentists will numb the gum with a topical anesthetic before injecting so you don't even really feel the needle, but even without the topical numbing the needle isn't all that bad. Some dentists will offer 'laughing gas' which makes you decidedly unaware of what's going on, but for a simple filling this is largely overkill. The side-effects of the gas outweigh the stress-revealing gains.

Once you're completely numb, they drill out the cavity which feels a little funny, but no pain at all. After ensuring the cavity is completely clean, the hole is filled. The entire procedure, depending on complexity, only takes a few minutes. After the numbing agent wears off, you can expect a small amount of soreness, but it's usually nothing more than a couple Aspirin can handle. You'll likely be told to be careful of what you eat until the filling has completely bonded with the tooth. I've had several fillings over the years and always end up eating burgers without problem the next day.Health Question & Answer

we usually use a topical anesthetic first and then use lidocaine, if that doesn't get you numb we use septocaine, it depends on the person how much of what we use, and also if it's and upper or lower tooth, lower teeth sometimes take longer to numb, after you're good and numb they'll remove the cavity, put in a liner if the cavity was pretty deep to cut down on the sensitivity and than fill it with amalgam, which I don't recommend, or composite tooth colored filling, if the cavity was pretty deep you may be sensitive for a few days, that's normal, just take some motrin/tylenol every 4-6 hrs. lidocaine wears of in 2-6hrs, again, depending on the patient. now if you're kinda scared of dental procedures I can only recommend nitrous/laughing gas, helps me and I'm a big chicken and it wears off as soon as they turn it off and you're able to drive, don't have to hassle with someone having to pick you up..... Good luck!!Health Question & Answer

I had to do the same. But all he will do is numb your gums by injecting some stuff out of a needle, and give you that sleeping gas stuff.

And afterwards it want hurt, you will just be really sleepy if you use the gas stuff. Health Question & Answer

he'll drill it and fill it probably. you might be there an hour, depending on how much decay there is. It hurts before, during and after the novocaineHealth Question & Answer
