it doesnt really hurt. it hurts for the first like 5 days that you have it but if it is a manual, every time you widen it you feel pressure for about 5-10 minutes, maybe less. i only have to wear mine for about a month-2 months more and i just got braces yesdarday. after a certain period of time you will not have to adjust it anymore, it is just in there to hold your jaw in the correct spot until they can get you in a strong enough wire on your braces. i had my expander for about a month and a half before braces and i will have it on for the same time after my braces were put on. i only adjusted it once a night for about 3 weeks. it is just in there for stability purposes now. i must warn you that it will feel really strange, you will have trouble talking and lots of trouble eating but since the eating and talking is a regular occurrence you should be used to it in no time. i got used to mine after about a week. now its just annoying :) hope i helped! and good luck!Health Question & Answer

I had the WORST teeth a few years ago, and one of the smallest jaws. Ive heard of putting the jaw widener on at the same time as the braces, but this was not my case. Most people also only have this on for a few months to a year, but mine was three years before my jaw was ready. This apperatus, yet nearly not as painful as braces, are a bit uncomfortable, especially if you get the one that you must tighten everyday with a "key" of sorts. But when I finally got mine off, my jaw was and still is regular and evn wider than most. It was definately worth it, and my teeth are now straightening out fully.

They make your jaw ache - but don't actively "hurt" like getting poked by something.

And two of my daughters had expanders at the same time as they had braces.

The worst part of it was their speech being all mushy because of the expander across the top of their mouth.Health Question & Answer
