When my son had braces for two years he had pain every time his braces were tightened. His teeth were large and very crowded.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO JUST IGNORE THE PAIN!!

I gave my son a tylenol or Ibuprofen when he first got home from the dentist and then had him rinse his mouth with warm salt water immediately and about every 4 hours while he was at home. (like you do for a sore throat as salt is a natural antibiotic) He always said the warm salty water really did the trick. Don't make it to salty.

He always took oral gel to school when his mouth bothered him at school since he couldn't rinse with salt water. (A student today probably would have to check with the school to see if you can even carry oral gel since there are so many drug problems today in the schools)

Since my son was also correcting an overbite he always had lots of wax to apply to the front of the braces to keep them from rubbing the inside of his lip and cutting them. He also said the wax helped to keep his back braces from rubbing his cheeks also so ask the dentist for plenty of the stuff to help you.

You do not have to suffer with pain for days as you can use these measures to help yourself. I am just surprised your dentist didn't tell you about the warm salt water as generally they do.

Good luck and congratulations on the beautiful teeth that you will have one day soon.Health Question & Answer
