If there's a visable cavity and it's starting to hurt, it's most likley a infection of the root of the tooth.

A periapical abscess.

Unfortuantley, although I know you don't want to hear it, you HAVE to get it checked out by a dentist.

Dental Abscesses can be VERY serious indeed, and NEED treatment as soon as possible.

ANY Pain in a tooth is taken as a serious matter, and if ANY swelling AT ALL in the gum area, or the cheek, you MUST MUST MUST see a dentist as soon as possible.

I know dentists are expensive, and you may not have the money- but trust me, dental abscesses can lead to a lot more problems than just a nasty tooth ache.

Four months ago, I had a bad cavity, like you- a visable hole in my tooth. There was NO pain what so ever, but the gums started to swell, and then my cheek started to swell. because there was no pain, and I couldn't really afford the dentist, I decided to leave it.

Second day, I woke up- and the swelling was so bad that I couldn't eat, let alone really talk. It still wasnt' hurting, so I left it.

Third day, I was on the bus on the way to school, and a dentist happened to be on the bus next to me, and he had been on the same bus the last three days that i'd had this swelling, and noticed it wasn't improving but getting worse. Once again, I refused to go see an actual dentist (I couldnt' afford it, and I was absolutley PETRIFIED of the dentist. I couldnt' even talk about a dentist, or go near a dentists surgery without freaking out. I hadn't gone to a dentist in 9 years prior to this).
The dentist on the bus, told me kindly that I really needed to get it seen to, and he said it looked like an abscess, and I needed to either go to the ER at the hospital, or to a dentist that day.

He scared the hell out of me, so when I got off the bus, I called into the local dentists office.

They told me to go to the hospital straight away, and get a series of X-rays done. When I'd gotten that done, I went back, and they gave me a script for Antibiotics (500mg Amoxcyllin) which I had to start right then and there.

They said my tooth couldn't wait, and I needed to get it seen to straight away. As an emergency appointment, they fitted me in then, and the dentist took a look at the tooth, and then the xray.

I did have a large Periapical abscess (root abscess), which was so advanced that not only had it spread to the gum and the cheek area, (facial tissue) but, the abscess was so far advanced that it had actually started to eat away at the bone in my jaw. It showed clearly on the xray that a large hole had been created in my jaw bone.

They had to immediatley extract the tooth, and then drain the abscess. It didn't hurt in the slightest.
I had Local anesthetic (the kind that numbs the area) although, it took 7 injections for it to work, due to the swelling of the gum and the cheek- the anesthetic had trouble getting through to the nerves. They ended up having to inject the anesthetic into the central nerve, for the lower jaw, at the back of my throat, where the wall of your throat meets the gum line). When I had the local anesthetic, and it finally worked, I didn't feel a thing (although, note- Local anesthetic DOES NOT send you to sleep. You're awake for the procedure, but you don't feel anything).

When the tooth had been extracted and the abscess drained, and the socket cleaned, they did warn me that if I had left it a single day later, I would've been in hospital, possibly in the Intensive Care Unit, with blood posioning and/or menigitis.

I had no idea dental abscesses (infections) could be that serious, but they are extremley serious, and can become very serious, very quickly.

I'm telling you this, not to scare you- but so hopefully you understand how important it is to get your tooth seen to.

Dentist told me that ANY swelling, what so ever is a sign that the abscess has begun to spread, and you need to see a dentist that day.
I waited three whole days with swelling, even though there was no pain- and they said it had almost been too late.

Don't leave an infected tooth to sit there.

Take pain killers to stop the pain for now, but you MUST see a dentist, no question about it.

Don't do what I did, get it done now before it creates more problems.

Think of it this way, if you don't see a dentist soon- and get it fixed while it's not that serious, think of how much it's going to cost if it gets worse and spreads, and you end up needing alot more treatment than you do now!Health Question & Answer

I am so sorry for your pain. I know how you feel because I'm up for almost the same reason. I had 2 teeth extracted. Usually what always helped me with what you're describing is yes, you can try warm salt water, but i always used listerine. I don't know why but it seemed to take the pain away very quickly. Depending on how bad the tooth is though, I'm not sure for how long. You may have a piece of food or something stuck in the hole that's making the pain so i always tried brusing also, just to make sure before i used the listerine. Advil always worked the best for me as far as pain med. And definately use orajel or anbesol. It'll help numb the pain. But definately go to the dentist soon or it'll only get worse. Good luck to you, dear. I feel your pain.Health Question & Answer

Take some painkillers and see a dentist as soon as you can. You may need a filling, you may need a root canal or you may need an extraction. Only your dentist can inform you as to what is going on and then what your options are.Health Question & Answer

Dentist, and have him fill it or rip it out.

There is nothing you can do to get rid of the pain for good, other than the dentist.Health Question & Answer

you should first gargle with warm salt water, then apply orajel, if that
doesnt work, then take a pain killer then use a heat pad or ice pack
what ever feels better, that should hold you off

By now your most likely have a tooth/gum infection. Applying Clove and taking Advil may help, but the condition won't heal itself. You've got to get it fixed.Health Question & Answer
