this does not sound at all like strep throat. if its a small bump that hurts when you lift your tongue or touch it, and has been there for a few hours or a day, chances are its just an inflamed cyst, which come and go quite frequently. many times, citrus or other intensely flavored foods cause this, and it should go away in a day or two if this is the case. however, if the whole area is really sore and youre in constant pain, that would not be the same thing. how long has this sore been there.? if youve had it for more than a couple of days, i would have it checked out by a doctor, not a dentist. you may have cut the part thats inflamed, and it could be infected, or (and this is most unlikely, so dont freak out!) it could possibly be a malignancy. i assume youre on the young side, so thats not the most likely cause, but you may need antibiotics if it is an infection. another possibility is that you have a damaged or exposed nerve in your gums, which may call for a root canal; do you feel pain when you chew on any of the teeth near the area.? in this case, a dentist would be the person to see, but a doctor can tell you whether its a dental issue. try cutting an ice cube in half (or using crushed ice) and putting it underneath your tongue until it melts. this will alleviate some pain through numbing.good luck!Health Question & Answer

You really need to go see your dentist asap...that's not normal and your dentist is really the only person who can tell you what it is.Health Question & Answer
