Abscess while taking amoxicilline?!

Question: Abscess while taking amoxicilline.?
I have my front teeth broken when I was 10 (15 yrs ago). Way back then, I have the nerve removed. Now, I felt toothache last week; on Saturday. it was all the night in the same broken teeth + upper left jaw. I saw the dentist on the first available appointment on Wed. He told me the nerve was not totally removed and I need a root canal. But for now it's an infection and he gave me amoxcilline 500mg/8 hrs for 7 days. I took it every 6 hrs. now during the 5th day (Sun) it developed a kind swelling in the gum above the teeth and it started for the first time to sour. the doctor is available only on Wed. I understand from web that this is abscess! how comes.? i'm taking an antibiotic and still get a bacterial infection.? is this a sign of problem with my immunity system.? (this is my first winter in toronto canada). meanwhile there will a 1 day without the medication before i see the doctor (my pills finish today), what should i do.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Hello.
Sounds like your dentist is correct. If all of the nerve is not removed from the tooth during a root canal, then all of the bacteria that causes the tooth to need a root canal in the first place are not removed either. This infection is usually small and localized, and your body will fight it. Sometimes though, it becomes more than your immune system can bear. You develop a small bump on your gum, like a vent hole, where the bacteria (pus) can drain out. This bump (you referred to it correctly as an abscess, is also called a fistula. The antibiotic you are on is helping to keep down the bacterial load, and running out one day before your Root Canal visit is not a problem. also, I don't think your problem is that you are Canadian either (LOL JK!!!) See your dentist and get the tooth canal retreated. He might Rx new medication for you at that time, or he might not.
Best of luck to you!Health Question & Answer

Sorry to hear about your problems. Some bacteria just are stronger than others. I have found through my own experiences that occasionally it takes 2 courses of medication to kill the bacteria, why not simply call to the dentist and tell them whats going on and they will probably call in another course of medication, and reschedule your appointment for when this course of antibiotics is completed. Make sense.?.? Im sorry your going through this mouth problems are NO fun at all. PS if its draining maybe try rinsing with lightly salted water to cleanse your mouth often, and or use mouthwash to keep the mouth cleaner during this time. Health Question & Answer
