Answers:
I have glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is caused by damage to the 9th cranial nerve and it gives me a very sharp pain in my ear and a feeling in my throat like it has been cut. It is part of my brainstem demyelination condition which my neurologist tells me is progressive for me.

Of course in other people damage to cranial nerves can be reversible if a tumour has caused it - it get removed. Health Question & Answer
