Question: Im thinking of becoming an orthodontist....?
but I'm really intimidated by what i've heard of how hard it will be. How long will I have to go to school.? How will I know if I'm cut out for it because if i try and fail I will have wasted all that time & money! This is such a hard decision.....Health Question & Answer

Being an orthodontist can be a very rewarding career choice but you need to have a strong background in science. If you have trouble in school understanding mathematics, physics, science, biology, etc. then you will likely have some trouble getting through the course work. Try talking to orthodontists in your area. See if they would be willing to have lunch with you sometime so that you can ask them about their jobs, and talk to more than one (at least 3 or 4). Number of years in school beyond high school is about 10, 4 for your bachelors degree, 4 for dental school and another 2 for ortho specialty training. If you go to public schools you can really cut the costs of getting your education and even in these tight credit markets there are plenty of lenders that are willing to invest and lend you the money to go to school so I wouldn't worry about that too much. Orthodontists make great money and paying off your loans should be easy while maintaining a decent lifestyle. Dentists/Ortho have the highest susidide rate and we dont want anything like that happening to you. also you have to take 8 years of school and its a ton of money.
