Severe pain after wisdom teeth removal?!

Question: Severe pain after wisdom teeth removal.?
i had all four of my wisdom teeth removed on friday, it is now tuesday
one side doesn't hurt at all and the swelling has gone down, but the left side (mostly the bottom) hurts like constant throbbing and is still really swollen.
i have an appointment to get checked by my oral surgeon tomorrow, but i can't open my mouth more than a few centimeters so how will he check for an infection.? can he force my mouth open and will it hurt.?Health Question & Answer

Sounds like you're having an infection, especially now that you can't really open your mouth as wide as before.

Ok here's how your appointment will most likely go. Your oral surgeon will first check the skin around your left lower jaw for signs of infection (redness, firmness, local heat, swelling). Then they will check inside your mouth in the same way every other dentist does - with a bright dental light, a dental mirror, and some angle adjustment of the chair. They should NOT force your mouth open, because the swelling from the infection (IF there is one) will physically prevent your mouth from opening all the way. (That's why I said with your limited mouth opening, an infection is likely - it's one of the clinical signs.)

If there is an infection they will give you antibiotics to reduce the swelling and painkillers for the pain. They will also wash the infected area in your mouth with sterile saline water in a syringe, although you can also rinse your mouth with mouth wash to achieve the same goal, which is to clean the wound.

What you can do on your part is to avoid any irritating food (hot, spicy, and/or hard food), and keep the wound clean by gargling with mouth wash after every meal, in addition to brushing your teeth and gently brushing food debris away from the wound every day.

Sound like dry socket.

" In a patient with a wisdom tooth dry socket, blood does not fill up the extraction socket or the blood clot is lost for some reason. The result is a wisdom tooth dry socket. The gums can not grow over the extraction socket because there's nothing to grow over and the wisdom tooth dry socket remains open. This open wisdom tooth dry socket causes a constant dull throbbing pain and the patient with a wisdom tooth dry socket can often have a foul smelling breath and bad taste in the mouth. The wisdom tooth dry socket pain can sometimes even be felt in the ear."Health Question & Answer

I am sure that your doctor has seen this same problem before. Everyone is different though. Your doctor will know when he sees your problem what to do for your pain and how to get your mouth open. He will most likely give you something to ease the pain before he begins his procedure. Make sure that you have someone to drive you because if they give you something to make you groggy you will not be able to drive yourself.

I wish you luck! I know it is painful, but in a couple of weeks you will be happy again.Health Question & Answer

when i had my wisdom teeth out, one of them shattered, and had to be cut out of my jaw, so know all about wisdom teeth pain. has your dental surgeon given you an analgesic to help with the pain.?
don't stress about the surgeon trying to force your mouth open, they are not like that, and they will have other ways to help you out. the surgeon wants you to get better as much as you do, so don't stress. he will be very gentle. he may even put you on an antibiotic just incase if he is not 100% positive of an infection.

I once had all my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time and days later, I was told by the dentist, after complaining about pain, that I had 'dry socket'. To ease the pain, they'll prolly stuff gauze into the holes where your teeth once were. It tastes like cloves, which is really nasty, but it sure does do the trick!Health Question & Answer

Do warm saline rinses gently after every 3 hours. This will help in healing. When the dentist will examine he will be very careful and will take only 2-3 minutes to examine and won't hurt. Do take the medicines regularly. For more information on this you can read the following very informative article from a dental website
