Is surgery always necessary in an underbite?!

Question: Is surgery always necessary in an underbite.?
Answers:
No, not always. It depends on whether it's only the teeth that are not aligned properly, only the bones supporting them, or both. To determine which one you are, the orthodontist will take xrays and impressions of your teeth for analysis. Then he will discuss your treatment options with you.

Generally, if it's only the teeth that are not properly aligned, only orthodontic treatment (i.e. braces) is needed.

If it's the bones or both bones and teeth that are not aligned properly, the orthodontist will then check your age.

If you have not reached your growth spurt yet, they will suggest some appliances to enhance growth in certain bones so that they are more properly aligned. After the growth spurt, orthodontic treatment will be necessary to make some further adjustments.

If you are past your growth spurt, then surgery will be required to adjust bone position. In that case, you will still need orthodontic treatment before the surgery to re-align the teeth, so that after they reposition the bones, the teeth will be able to form a stable bite. After the surgery, more orthodontic treatment is required to make the final minor adjustments.

Hope this helps. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

It depends on what class jaw you have. I was told by an orthodontist that my class 3 jaw could only be corrected by breaking and resetting my jaw (just so I could have braces). Serious thing to think about.Health Question & Answer

Your orthodontist can best advise you in that matter! See your orthodontist!Health Question & Answer
