even if it did work, why is it forced on us.? does our government really care so much about our teeth.? how come we don't put other so called preventative medicine in our water.? is the government so concerned with the rest of our bodies.?

That's a good question. Fluoride has been in controversy for a long time. It is a poison, and if you ingest it (more than a pea-sized toothpaste), you need to call poison control. Children have died eating toothpaste, so it has to be closely monitored. Fluoride was found to strengthen tooth enamel TOPICALLY, meaning when placed on the surface of the tooth. Studies have been done on ingested fluoride and bone breakage in the elderly, and there seems to be a connection, for too much fluoride actually eats away at teeth and bones. Have you noticed that many children have mottled teeth (white spots on them, or whitish discoloration).? That is due to too much fluoride when the teeth were forming. It is permanent, and the only way to get rid of it is to get veneers.
The belief that fluoride is placed in water is that the government gives $$$ to towns that implement it. It will cost the cities and towns $$ after the initial plant implementation, but the public will cover those costs. It's amazing that some areas have enough natural fluoride in their water, but the city still puts in more.

Fluoride does help strengthen teeth and this has been shown over and over in many studies. We used to think it's primary action was from ingestion and uptake into the developing teeth, but this is now thought to account for only 30% of the action and the remaining 70% comes from the topical effect as fluoridated water passes over your teeth. Again, studies have shown benefits for people who grew up in non-fluoridated areas, then moved to fluoridated areas as adults - their teeth are less prone to decay than the adults who stayed behind.
Too much fluoride does NOT affect bones, and again the studies have borne this out. And teeth are NOT bone, so you cannot compare them. Yes, you may get some mild discolourations from the fluoride, but it is all about risk/benefit ratios. What's a mild mark worth compared to a mouthful of cavities.?
If you want a real comparison, talk to dentists in fluoridated areas and non-fluoridated areas. the non-fluoridated do a hell of a lot more cavities than fluoridated areas. One of the dental company reps told me that country dentist in non-fluoridated areas order 3x the rate of filling materials as city dentists with fluoride.

And the same for immunizations as another form of "mass medication" - would you go to some 3rd World country without your shots.? Our health and life expectancy has greatly improved over the past 100 years, but some people want to go back to the Stone Age.
