This has happened to me before. As I was sleeping, very small gnomes climbed into my mouth. When I ate whatever they were craving the next day, they began to stab my gums with small toothpick like weapons. Just eat something they don't like. Or something acidic.Health Question & Answer
From a dental stand point, not normal. If it's a dental issue, you may severe gingivitis. You should see a dentist and get a good cleaning. Afterwards, make sure you do good brushing and flossing.
If the coughing started the bleeding, then I'm concerned something else could be going on.
