2 year old needs to see dentist?!

Question: 2 year old needs to see dentist.?
My dentist recommended taking my son for his first check up at age 3. Tonight I was brushing his teeth and his gums started bleeding heavily enough to cause concern. I'm worried that he has a gum infection. He HATES having his teeth brushed. He's not bad when you brush the "chewing parts" of his molar teeth but he screams when you lift his lips to brush his front teeth. The bleeding came from somewhere in the front.

Has anyone taken a child under 3 to the dentist.? I know my son will scream and cry when they try to look into his mouth. Do they use gas to calm down hysterical children.?

I'm worried about the chance of him having an infection so we're definitely going to make an appointment. What should I expect.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Take him to a pediatric dentist. It's normal for a young child to struggle or cry with new or restraining situation (he'd probably cry if you tried to stop him from running in the street) It's far more traumatic for your child to NOT get the areas brushed. Imagine what it would take to do a filling if needed! My girls fought and cried, but would ultimately let be brush to some degree. My son was more of a challenge. I was sure I'd poke his eye out or something with the toothbrush. (he's 2 and 1/2 now and is just beginning to let me brush his teeth without a struggle...mostly). For the fighters, I recommend using "Spiffies", which are a slightly abrasive gauze with Xylitol (natural sweetener, kill decay causing bacteria).

My nephew is 2 and has had a few dental check ups. He even went in for a dental surgery recently. For the surgery he was put under a little. He was really good for his mom, but she was telling me that her other son was a little hell raiser when he had to go. Health Question & Answer

He probably doesn't brush enough and maybe you brushed his gums to hard......Health Question & Answer
