I found out I have gum disease, what will they do at the gum specialist?!

Question: I found out I have gum disease, what will they do at the gum specialist.?
My dentist is sending me to a gum specialist to "fix" my gums. What will they do.? How bad will it hurt.? What exactly is the procedure and how long will I probably be out of work.?Health Question & Answer

Hey, it's not so bad! Since you've only just found out you have periodontal disease I'm guessing you haven't had it very long, so I imagine the 'fixing' will consist of a few sessions of fairly vigorous digging about to get rid of deep-seated plaque. This sounds nasty, but you can opt for a pain-killing injection or just take 2 paracetamol an hour before your visit. If you're actually due for more intensive, surgical treatment, your dentist would have told you what you need to know. Otherwise, just give him a bell and ask. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

Do you smoke.? Smoking is a big cause. I had several years worth of treatment. I'm glad I was in the Air Force and didn't have to pay for it.

The first thing they may do is measure around each tooth how deep your pockets are.
If you just have deep pockets under your gums they will schedule you for deep cleaning or scaling they call it. They hygienist or periodontist will do 1/4 of your mouth at a time and when I had it done they gave me shots to numb it so it didn't hurt. The gums were a little sore afterward but it went away in a couple of days. You won't need to miss any work other than what time it takes at the dentist for that.
Your gums will reattach to the super clean teeth.
If you have areas of gum that have receded from around your teeth and exposed the root they may want to put a piece of tissue they've gotten from another area of your mouth in that spot and stitch it on. They're hoping it'll take. In my experience it lasts a few years and the condition of the gums gets bad again. You'll just need the afternoon off you have the surgery.

Taking Vitamin C may help. I ended up having my teeth get loose and needed to have them pulled for dentures by the time I was 50. Like I said if you smoke quit if you want to keep your own teeth. They're a h*ll of a lot better than dentures. Chantix works real well to quit.
