Question: Is ther *any* situation that can cause a dry socket 10 days after an upper molar extraction.? Please help..?
It's now 10 days after an upper molar extraction, and I keep touching the site with my tongue out of habit. Its still quite tender, and I think the healing has been slow due to my smoking (which I started on day 3 or 4). I am continuing gentle warm salt water gargling after anything I eat, and I have not had a sip of a carbonated drink or alcohol since the extraction. At this stage, can a dry socket still be caused (due to very tender tissue), or other complications.?

Is it advisable (or not) to re-start antibiotics.? I stopped them on day 6 after the required dosage period. So far the pain in minimal, with the odd (but very dull) headache, but nothing major.

I am travelling in 3 days and there will be a moderate amount of drinking going on.

Any advice on air travel 2 weeks after an extraction.?

I have been to the dentist 4 times since the extraction and he been saying to continue my normal life.

Your knowledgeable input will greatly help as I do tend to worry about having any complications while on holiday. I know I will have to stay away from the harder meats.

Please understand that I am not asking about blood clots. I'm on the 10th day after extraction.Health Question & Answer

I have to say that it isn't drinking carbonated drinks that cause a dry socket. From what I understand, a dry socket is from suction...which comes in from sucking air, like when you smoke or drink from a straw because you can pull the plug, so to speak, from the clotted spot in your mouth. It will be sore...that is expected. I had an extra tooth removed about a month ago and it took about 4 weeks for it to not be sensitive and sore. Wait it out and keep on with the good oral hygiene...that is about all you can do.

I have to add that I think you are also safe from dry socket by now....I asked about that and the dentist said that unless I did something extremely shocking to my mouth it should be ok..Health Question & Answer
