How long can I put off getting a crown put on my back molar tooth after a having a root canal performed on it?!

Question: How long can I put off getting a crown put on my back molar tooth after a having a root canal performed on it.?
I'm due to have a root canal procedure done on one of my top rear molar teeth on Monday. I have no insurance so this is already going to be VERY expensive to have done. The dentist told me that I will need a crown put on it after I get the root canal done, however I simply just won't have any money left over after to have the crown put on (also a very expensive procedure).

And, like every other of the 100 dentists I've tried, they won't setup any type of payment plans. I've applied for that carecredit card, but due to my less than great credit I was not approved.

So, I am going to have to wait to get the crown put on until I have enough money to afford to get it done, which will be in about 1 1/2 - 2 monts from now.

Is it safe for me to wait that long to get it crowned.? I mean, as long as I am very careful with what I eat (avoiding hard foods, excessive sweets) I should be OK, correct.?

Please give me your advice from similar experiences, and what the outcome of waiting was. Thanks for your info.Health Question & Answer

I had a root canal done this past May and I was in your same situation. Luckily I did find a dentist that would put me on a payment plan. If you live in CT it was Jeffry Bisson in Cheshire.

I did not get a crown, and to this day I still do not have one and I haven't cracked a tooth yet, but I'm conscious of how I eat with it every day. I must make sure not to chew hard things with that tooth; and some things I don't eat at all. I do eat nuts, but I chew them on the opposite side at first and once they're soft I distribute them around my mouth. Your common sense should be enough to keep you out of trouble.

You'll be fine if you wait, 1-2 months isn't too long at all. Like I said, it's been 7 months and still counting for me. I won't be able to get crowned until 2009 either.Health Question & Answer

The risk you run is breaking the remaining portion of your tooth off.... If that happens, theres a chance you cannot save the tooth. Just be careful, don't eat hard foods ... and you should be fine. Just do not wait longer than you have to. It is vey impportant you get the treatment started. Health Question & Answer

Root canal treatment is called "Endodontic Therapy" in dentistry.
Teeth that have been endodontically treated become brittle, because there is no longer any blood supply to that tooth, and pieces may break off. If the tooth breaks off BELOW the gumline, it will be lost, then more expense to have that extracted and replacement. It is imperative that you have a post and core after the root canal which will support the tooth and keep it strong until you can have the crown done in a couple of months. I'm sure your dentist mentioned that in the treatment plan. Carecredit usually approves in as little as 10 minutes, and if you have a job, it shouldn't be a problem.
Get the endo, and post and core, and then wait for the crown.
