Major issues with my teeth?!

Question: Major issues with my teeth.?
I've been going to the same dentist for about 4 years and he told me that my mouth was okay, just a few minor cavities here and there, nothing to worry about too much.

So, I crack one of me teeth and I can't get in to my usual dentist and head to another. He tells me that my mouth is a disaster area, that I'll have to have extensive surgery and this isn't anything that could have ocurred in 6 months (the last time I had a check up). Which hardly makes any sense to me considering I brush my teeth 3 times a day, floss, and mouth wash 4.

So now I'm going on a vendetta in my life in order to completely remove sugars and things that could harm my teeth from my life. But people keep telling me it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you brush your teeth after you eat it. I have a hard time believing this so can I get some confirmation on this and maybe some possible reasons why my teeth are so bad when I do my best to take care of them.?Health Question & Answer

The issue is bacteria in your mouth destroying your teeth with various byproducts of their metabolism. Brushing your teeth helps quite a bit by removing their food source but doesn't solve the root problem.

Few dentists understand this issue, unfortunately. If they had access to an electron microscope, they would very quickly see the source of the problem. But that is not standard procedure among dentists, lol. Luckily, the solution is not so high tech.

You need to kill the bacteria. Problem is, the area where they are is not a place you can use strong antiseptic agents. What you do is get some salt, some baking soda (NOT baking powder...baking SODA) and some peroxide. Mix 1 teaspoon of each together. And scrub this into your gumline with a toothbrush twice a day. Once in the morning. Once before bedtime. Brush your teeth as normal afterward.

This solution really interferes with those bacteria growing in your mouth. Over the long term, it will get rid of them and solve most problems with periodontal disease. Known as The Keyes Method (check out the book by the same name) it is primarily used (quite successfully I might add) to stop gum disease, tooth decay and other problems in third world countries that simply cannot afford dental care.

As to why this is a problem in the first place. Who the hell knows. Supposedly, it's an issue of an unhealthful diet in the western world. You body excretes immunoglobulins into your mouth to kill bacteria, normally. A crappy diet means not enough of that is being created so bacteria that should not be there are free to grow. It's only a theory. However, one thing that is definitely NOT a theory is that smoking makes these problem MUCH worse by actively destroying the immunoglobulins in your mouth. Then the bacteria there go hog wild. This can be a rather big deal in certain cases. For example, periodontal disease has been implicated as a major cause of pancreatic cancer (essentially an untreatable death sentence if you catch this). Smoking VASTLY increases the rate of both. I know at least one person who died because of this.Health Question & Answer
