They (the wires) put pressure on your teeth when you first get them and after monthly adjustments. Ibuprofen is really helpful here. Make sure you have looots of soft foods (tomato soup, yougurt, pudding, Jell-O, ice cream, applesauce, etc.) for after you get your braces on--and wax for the pointy parts as well, too.

When you actually go in to get them done, here's the procedure:
*Make sure you wear lip gloss or Chapstick when you go in because they put in a ton of plastic lip stretchers--your lips may get dry.
*They coat your teeth w/ a substance to prepare your enamel for the special glue that holds the brackets on.
*They spread the glue on the front of your teeth.
*They adjust the brackets on your teeth (the little square metal things)
*They shine a purplish-blue light (it's bright!) on each tooth for 60 secs. to bond the brackets and glue to your teeth.
*They thread in the wires.
*Some orthodontists offer colored o-rings (also known as "doughnuts" or "ligatures") on each bracket to hold the wire to your brackets. They come from hot pink to baby blue to plain silver. Ask what's available to you! (You change your colors at every adjustment. also, some orthos can do patterns--such as two colors for your favorite sports team.)
*At appointments, you might get rubber bands or headgear that hook onto your braces. Remember to wear these as instructed.
*You're done! Make sure to brush & floss your teeth every day for a healthy, straight smile! :)Health Question & Answer

When I had just got my braces it hurt so bad I couldn't eat. When my father and sister got them they had no pain at all. So braces can hurt for some people while it doesn't hurt others. The procedure is that they will place a bracket which is a little piece of metal that holds a wire around your teeth. This wire will gradually be replaced with a thicker wire which will slowly adjust your teeth. It is very important that you keep your mouth clean and is also important that you floss although it will be a lot harder to do. With braces one is more likely to get your gums swollen(gingivitis).Good Luck hopefully it isn't painful to you.Health Question & Answer

for me, they hurt loads when i ate and brushed my teeth, other than that, it wasn't too bad. they rubbed a bit though, and i got some ulcers around my mouth. its not so bad when you get used to it, even when you have to get it tightened. it doesnt hurt getting them on either, they basically just stick them on (they use a laser to dry them) and tighten the wire up. they probably wont be as bad as you think, good luck :)Health Question & Answer

i had braces for 7 years!!! it depends what sort, if its an appliance, they dont hurt at all except for soreness and rubbing against ur gums and mouth. train tracks feel tight and again rub, but u can get some cool colours so make sure u ask! also ask for some wax from the dentist- you can put it over the metal parts that are rubbing your mouth/gums and it stops it rubbing anymore while it heals.

You're lucky you dont have to wear head gear!!!Health Question & Answer

they do hurt every time you sit in that dentist chair when the dentist tightens them its so hard that your teeth may even bleed whilst hes tightening them.

you have to take your tooth brush every where you go to brush food off,

their was so annoying but at least you have straight teeth at the end.

They are really painful :(Health Question & Answer

they don't hurt going on except i will warn you that on your back molars they shove a ring around it....that does hurt. they put spacers in first to make room. they hurt. everything else is okay. except maybe when they get tightened once a month....not that bad overall.Health Question & Answer

They hurt when you get them put on because your teeth are not used to them. When you get used to them, they won't hurt! Every time you go and get them tightened you will feel the soreness!Health Question & Answer

yeah they do hurt but only the first few daysHealth Question & Answer
