What is the purpose of dental x-rays?!

Question: What is the purpose of dental x-rays.?
I have no dental insurance and unless the x-rays serve a very important purpose, I'd rather not pay for them.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
We look for lots of stuff on x-rays. First, cavities between teeth and sometimes in the chewing surfaces of teeth. We also check the bone level for signs of gum disease. Position of impacted wisdom teeth. also more obscure things like internal/external resorption even cancer. Sometimes we can pick up systemic diseases like diabetes, histiocytosis X and scleraderma. They are important, but I still feel like many dentists take them way too much. The need for xrays should be individual. Someone with no fillings or gum disease, I take them every 2-3 yrs (sometimes more). someone with a history of a lot of cavities, I take them every year and a half to 2 yrs. Someone with uncontrolled cavity problem, every year.
Hope this helps.Health Question & Answer
